Today’s video is a bit different compared to the general schedule. We have some surprising #news coming from Google Project Zero. They’ve just posted a few hours ago a full write-up describing in details how #iOS 10, iOS 11 and iOS 12 devices were continuously hacked since 2016 using 5 different exploit chains discussed in details by Google Project Zero on their blog. According to Ian Beer of Google Project Zero, anybody who accessed specific vector websites got infected and had their data retrieved and sent over by a small program the website would drop on one’s device.
Google Project Zero mentioned on their blog that the websites in cause receive thousands of visits per week rising the number of the infected devices significantly, especially if the people accessing these websites run a slightly older than current firmware version, as it’s many times the case. In an analysis published by Google Project Zero of the malicious program the websites deploy to one’s device, they describe that the program grabs Contacts, messages from popular social media tools like WhatsApp and Viber, mails, call lists, device and SIM IDs, location data, phone number, photos, notes, voice recordings and so on.
The problem is, anybody who ran a slightly outdated version of iOS between 2016 and 2019 could have been infected by accessing such websites without even knowing. As Google Project Zero states, there’s no way for a normal user to tell that the malicious program was injected and was running in the background.
For your own #safety, it’s recommended that you change your passwords to something hard to guess and unique for each site, and avoid using old passwords. It’s also advised that you review your login history for your social media and e-mail and kick out any unknown device. While this is bad news for iOS users, awareness is the key to prevent such things from happening again.
